Superdad.com.au is all about the joys, challenges and lessons of being a bloke in the role of primary caregiver.

From January to December 2009 I had the pleasure of being at home with my eldest son, Austin, for months nine to 19 of his young life. It was a blast, but it wasn't all easy.

This site captures it all. From self-feeding to potting training; the politics of playgroup and the suspicious looks from all those mums on the high street. There's recipes, activities and road trips. There's SAHD news from around the world. There's things not to do on online auctions - no matter how long your child's afternoon sleep.

It may inform, inspire or amuse. Heck, it might just do all three.

An Austin In Awe

Yesterday Austin met his hero. His face beamed with a smile as big as Texas.

It wasn't at Melwood, Liverpool's training ground; nor, thankfully, in the lobby of Melbourne's Crown Casino Hotel where Tom and Katie are currently staying. And, no, it wasn't his Dad.

Those who read the June 24 post won't be surprised to learn that the boy and I were instead on a visit to the Balmain Library.

Yep, talking to one of the librarians.

To be honest, it's a bit embarrassing that this was the first time we'd popped in. Based in the old Town Hall, it makes fantastic use of this grand old building and includes not just a selection of children's books but also an impressive toy library.

Tipped off by one of the mothers at playgroup, we were there to check out the library's new reading group for zero to two year-olds, 'Baby Bounce & Rhyme Time'.

A similar group runs at one of the local book shops, but Austin's obsession with pulling books off shelves and redistributing them around the room means this is not an ideal environment.

Best his exposure is contained to pre-loved volumes. At least for now, and definitely when he's not confined to his stroller.

Of course, being Balmain the inaugural session of Baby Bounce is already booked out. Places are opened up a week prior to each class, so at 9.30am sharp next Tuesday morning the library switchboard is guaranteed to light up like it's a breakfast radio phone-in competition.

If we make it, great. If not, rhymes are for wimps. I'll just let the boy loose in the kids section. Or let him talk to the librarian.
